as usual... i'm an a big slacker

if you had any idea how busy i've been...

howdy folks! hope everyone is doing well and having fun. i'm about three weeks behind on updates from the show and may not be able to fill in all the blanks. last night we had a marvelous show... Eugene Chadbourne joined us during the first hour to play some music and talk about his upcoming shows. if i ever get around to typing it up... transcripts of the show may go up on the WQFS website.

a big thanks to y'all who came out to the cover band show on friday! it was an awesome event and we'll be getting people together in the next few weeks to talk about what we should do with the money collected that evening (in the meantime, please post ideas here)! also,i think at the shows on friday and saturday night we registered over thirty new people to vote... go WQFS!!

so here's the playlist:

glockenspiel - When the record goes around... -- i fell in love with this song years ago after discovering it on the wifflefist compilation of NC bands... it's a noise lover's dream and lovley way to start a show off!
Dexter Romweber - 13 Women -- this is off a solo project he released back in '95 ... it has this gothic feel to it, complete with organ interludes and vocals that sound like they were recorded in an empty underground tomb
beatless - Liars Beward -- my regular listeners should know that i am fond of Richard Hell and that I am very fond of the ablum this song came from... NC band's tribute to Richard Hell
Pine State - Live fast, Love hard, Die young and The Gambler -- two country standards from the this triangle band... what better way to kick off an interview with doc chad??
Aki Takase, feat. Eugene Chadbourne - Hold Tight -- from a tribute album to Fat's Waller check out her website
Eugene Chadbourne - 17 West -- off a forthcoming album called the Hills have Jazz where he plays a guitar borrowed from Wes Craven
Dave Fox Group - Bran Flakes -- this local jazz outfit will be playing at ps211 this tursday night
noahjohn and Chadbourne - Don't Burn the Flag, Let's Burn the Bush -- this is from a new album that is a mirror piece to 1985's Country Protest w/ the Red Clay Ramblers... the song is an updated version for Bush II
Merle Haggard - That's the News -- here's yet another classic country musician with something to say and noone to listen... what ever happend to the "family value" of honoring our eldars... or do we just love the one's with last names that are synonymous to money?
Euene Chadbourne with Malachy Papers - You Got It Bad -- yes it's the Usher song... and a damn good version of it... check out their website
Robotnicka - L'Espoir -- the robots have finally re-united in Greensboro and will be playing two shows this week! Tuesday at Gate City and Friday at GO!
Spatula - Slipjoint -- if you ever see spatula listed to play a show ... go see them!!
Big GMC - Drive Thru -- you don't see Big GMC out and about as much as he was back in the mid-nineties, but i know he's still out there writing poetry to make it throuh life working in fast food...
Uwharria - Appalachian Skullcap -- the Uwharriors will be playing a double header on Friday... at 7pm they will kick off the South Eastern Anarchist Network Conference at the Grapevine in Greensboro and then off to Go! to play with Robotnicka and the next band
Black Castle - Raiding the Ballroom -- these guys are crazy enough to fill a bill with Uwharria AND Robotnicka
Choke Their Rivers With Our Dead Crayon -- i'm told this song will be on their forthcoming album... they will play the Crimson Spectre cd release party on April 23 at Gate City Noise
Zegota - Bike Song -- i love this song and play it too often...
Rise - how's your DNA? -- this is off the newest release from these rockers... they just played at Ace's Basement and if you missed that show like I did then kick yourself, like i did
All Night - Night Dogs -- we may have one of two of these guys on the show next sunday... i hear they are opening for Ned Oldham's band (Anomoanon) at ps211 on April 18
Cherry Valence - Baby Please Don't Go -- classic rocker written by Joe Williams and popularized by the likes of Them, AC/DC, and others...
Pipe - No Action -- had to play this one in honor of the cover band show on friday night... my favorite's -- costello, minutemen and the cramps (even though they didn't play garbageman OR crusher!!) -- basically those that played the bands we don't always see at cover shows!!
Backsliders - High Fashion Queen -- to continue the cover songs, here's a nice live version of the Flying Burrito Brother's classic
Geezer Lake - This Damn Machine -- well, we started the show with noise, so why not end it that way with this tune from Greensboro's most loved/hated noisy band of the 90's

so, that's the show... stay tuned for more information... i'll try to get you basic playlists from the shows with the Nein and Joe Garrigan...

until then....

go out and make some music!!

Interview With The Nein!!

We are going to be interviewing The Nein this coming sunday night. The Nein is Finn Cohen (vocals and gutiar), Casey Burns (bass), and Rober Biggers (drums). So, Robert went to Guilford College a long long long time ago and he lived next door to me and sometimes i would listen to him playing music on the other side of the wall ... and then he graduated and went on to become this super hip rocker in the Triangle music scene (formerly of the White Octave along with Finn, and currently in Coldsides and Audobon Park) and he's bringing his band to hang out with us at the 'qfs! Sounds good? I hope so... tune in and call us and all that good stuff.

Local-Motion!!

Show with Devender of (the) Kudzu Wish

so, this past sunday night 3/14, we were graced by the presence of one of greensboro's finest people... devender sellars. he's one of the guitar players for greensboro's often touring Kudzu Wish! It was a fun show... we talked about what's happening with the band -- mostly touring, and looking for a new drummer when Geordie leaves to pursue other interests, and what it's like to be a rocker in NC. Kudzu Wish is going on tour this friday and will pass through Greensboro to play a show with Against Me!, planes mistaken for stars, and No Choice at Ace's Basement on April 5. So... here's what we played:

Kudzu Wish The Guilt
Tiger Bear Wolf Pens Tied Down
Raymond Brake New Wave Dream
The Nein War is on the Stereo
Uwharria Bald Eagles
Against Me! Cliche Guevara (not NC band... yeah we know)
Black Castle ... boneless phoenix!
Robotnicka Double Dragon IV: Axis of Evil
Archers of Loaf All the Nations Airports
Polvo Sense of it
Refused liberation frequency (starting a set of Non-NC but influential to devender/kudzu wish)

Leap something or another stupid title...

So, we finally did a real show with no interviews. We're kinda leanin' towards just playing NC bands -- instead of sprinkling in songs from out of state bands with upcoming shows. You might hear a non-NC band every now and then in an interview night, but there is soo much awesome stuff from here, and we want to focus on NC! Tonight's show had a circular theme... we started with some solid mid-90's "North Carolina is gonna be the next Seattle" bands and finished with some... in between we played some great greensboro bands -- past and present -- and stuck a keyboard driven wedge in the middle.... it looked like this:

Archers of Loaf Chumming the Ocean (off the final live album)
Superchunk Art Class (recorded at CD Alley, off the Clambake Sessions, Vol 1)
Right Profile Cosmopolitan Lovesick Blues (This was off an old NC Comp... if you want to know more about this band then ask Maddog or Tom -- of Tom's Diner)
Souther Culture on the Skids Viva Del Santo (from the awesome 7" with Santo on the cover)
The Attitudes Lawyer From Hell (i don't know much about this band other than they had a great horn section)
The Other Mothers Napalm Beach (from right here in Greensboro! i think most of these guys still live around here -- i would love to see a reunion show)
Village Pistols Strawberry Fields (so, i have this 7" and i need to get
  • Michael
  • to look at it and tell me if it's an original or a knock-off... either way, it's awesome to hear this kind of music being recorded in Greensboro back in the '80

The Suspects Once It Hits Ya (you should see the pictures of the band... i'll try to scan some sometime)
Coldsides Field Recorder (this is off an ep they had back in the spring... it features saxaphone by Anne Gomez)
Cantwell - Gomez - Jordan Music For Gnome Ladz (this group is going to be playing with Xiu Xiu at ps211 pretty soon... I'm glad to see Dave Cantwell still playing drums post marriage)
Piedmont Charisma California Closeout (i just got this 7" from the band the night before at their UNCG show... which was awesome)
Robotnicka Last Ninja II: Central Park (this band is partly from greensboro... and we are setting up a show for them at Guilford on
  • April 27!
  • !)

Piedmont Charisma Bach Beat (the other song off the new 7" -- these were recorded at the same time as the song on the Compulation CD)
Robotnicka Discowgirlz (Il etait une fois dans l'Est) (pronounced row - BOT -neetch - Kaa)
Witchcraft By A Picture Ptolemaic Worldview (these guys hail from the triangle and are one of thos awesome keyboard laiden hardcore bands)
Black Castle ...and the boneless Phoenix shall rise again!! (don't know much about this band other than they will play with An Albatross at ps211 on April 1)
Undying This Day All Gods Die (title track from their first cd... the line-up has changed a bit, but the ideology holds on strong... check 'em out sometime)
Choke The Rivers With Our Dead Catholic School Grrls Ro-oo-ule (so, this three piece is fronted by a woman with some of the scariest vocals in the state... this song will be one their album when it comes out)
The Nein Handout and War is on the Stereo (this band is awesome... check out their website -- www.thenein.com -- more to come)
Raymond Brake Filthy Lucre (one of Greensboro's greatest bands)
Des_Ark Yes Sir, Yes Way (quite possibly NC's hottest bands... these two will blow you away live... and you'll have lots of chances to see them in the coming months)
All Astronauts Curing the Remedy (this record is incredible and i smile whenever i listen to it)
The Finks Heat Rises (their album was number one on the WQFS top 35 this past week! look for some of their members to cover X at the Greensboro Cover Up at the beginning of April)
Crimson Spectre Ghoul Punks & White Trash Manifesto (both songs off the soon to be released fulllength)
tiger bear wolf pens tied down (they are from greensboro, they play around here... you should go see them before it's too late)
Kudzu Wish i am robot (we are trying to get Devender and Eric in to the station before they run off on tour again... )
Polvo Can I Ride (classic old Chapel Hill indie rockers)
Pipe No Action (cover of the old Elvis Costello song)
Pine State I'm Your Man (another cover by the cow-punk freakout band doing a song by richard hell for a tribute/fundraiser album from about ten years back-- in short, heaven)

so that was the show -- if you heard it, thanks... if you missed it, then too bad.

we'll be gone for a week and then back the following sunday..

until then go to www.guilford.edu/wqfs and click on Community Calendar to see what kind of upcoming shows you are missing by sitting in front of your computer!!

    --erin and kelly out!

So, as promised here's a concert calendar for the state as of today... over the next few weeks I'll begin to include some venues in Wilmington and try to get the dates from some of the one-off spots (houses, squats, skateparks ... etc) so if you have info, then please let me know... i'm doing this per request of cara and erin (the bosses) so help out if possible. Always remember, shows are subject to change, so call ahead to make sure everything is right. Oh yeah, support your local scene, and support underground music!
